Response to Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants

Even though Jamaica is a small school, my students have access and exposure to all types of technology, especially video games.  Many topics of conversations among my students are about video games.  Ipods and MP3 players are also popular.  I often find it hard to share their excitement about the new gadgets they get probably because I do not have those things myself.  I am trying to get kids more connected to the computers in our classroom through games that practice skills taught in class but I don't feel as though I have hooked them enough because of my lack of expertise.

I am an immigant!

Response to "Using Technology for a More Differentiated Classroom" by Linda Brandon

  • First, I really liked the format of the reading.  I had limited time to finish (in between children's needs and the internet was disabled) but I easily navigated through the material.  I found myself taking notes on paper (immigant!) and discovered that I differentiate my own instruction more than I think!
  • I have never taken a differentiated instruction course but I have learned from reading on my own and observing other teachers.  Reading this article reminded me of how differentiated instruction is best practice and technology can be an extremely useful tool for challenging all levels and styles of learners.
  • Assessment drives instruction and differentiated instruction begins with preassessment as well as post assessment.  For some reason, I was not able to access some of the assessment links.
  • My personal challenge is finding internet sources that match student's internet readiness but I found the resources listed in this article to be very helpful.  I really liked the Iditarod links because they were new to me and I can use them this year.  There was a daily activity link and I envision using this for a morning meeting activity.
  • I felt better when I did recognize some of the links because I have used them.
  • I read an additional article about PowerPoint and how students really get caught up in the presentation rather than the content.  "Curriculum comes first" was the last part of Ms. Brandon's article and it is an important point.

Response to Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators

  • As others in the group mentioned, I also found the site to contain so much!
  • The first place I explored was the rubrics.  I am always looking for quick, easy rubrics.
  • Next, I checked out the math sites.  I found some good links that I will add to my portaportal page that are interactive, fun, and easy for kids to navigate.
  • Another place I checked out was the evaluation forms that students could use when they looked at websites...these forms help students decide whether the site will be valuable to them.  There were forms for educators as well.
  • I have this site bookmarked!

www.internet4classrooms.com  is one of my favorite sites for interactive learning for students

and internet help for educators!

Hi Kate, I also say thanks for the site and will check it out when I have time. I've been amazed at some of the work you have shared in our class - you sit over there so quietly working away and come up with "wow" work. Thanks for the inspiration!
